Residents angry after continued car break-ins at Norfolk apartment complex

NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) — Some residents of the Park Crescent Apartments are upset after cars were broken into at the complex yet again.

Kenneth Midgette has lived at the complex for five years and reached out to 10 On Your Side after he awoke to find his care broken into Thursday morning. It was parked on Crescent Way with several other cars.

“I come to see my passenger side window busted out, there is glass all over the ground,” Midgette said. “Then I turn around and look down and I see the young lady’s car here, busted out.”

Midgette said he called 911 to report that about a dozen cars had been broken into.

According to Norfolk Police, they received nine larceny from auto reports from Crescent Way and one vandalism report overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.

“They took my work bag,” Midgette said. “It had belts and stuff in it.”

Police ended up finding it discarded on another part of the property, according to Midgette.

“II’s the same thing,” Midgette said, referring to the 17 vehicles broken into in January 2017. “We come out here, we pay rent. We expect to have some type of security out here.”

Park Crescent Apartments is owned by Gumenick Management out of Richmond. The company also manages South Beach Apartments in Virginia Beach.

“We are stepping up patrols with both our hired security company and Norfolk police will be stepping up patrols here as well,” said Ellen Thornhill, a spokesperson for Gumenick. “When something like this happens we have to sit down and see what can be done to make improvements and we will do that as well.”

Park Crescent does have surveillance cameras, however none were able to capture the area where the recent break-ins occurred, Thornhill said.

“We really feel good about the level of security we provide,” Thornhill said. “We want to remind residents to keep valuables out of cars and lock them each night.”

However, Midgette said he wants to see action.

“Nobody else in this complex will have to come out here and go to work and not make it because there car has been vandalized out here in this apartment complex,” Midgette said.

Norfolk Police confirmed they have stepped up patrols in this area and ask anyone with information about the break-ins to contact the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
