UPDATE: A local woman tells 10 On Your Side she saved the kitten around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning while fishing near the bridge.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side is investigating claims that there’s a kitten under the West Norfolk Bridge in Portsmouth.
There have been two confirmed sightings, and a police officer who confirmed she heard it too.
10 On Your Side was contacted by Misty Fanney, who owns a boat at the Virginia Boat and Yacht Marina, and she really cares about the kitten. She hears meowing in the night.
Without going into too much detail, we also found signs a kitten may have dropped through a crevice that leads to the concrete bridge support.
Misty Fanney was saying “meow, meow, meow, kitty, kitty, kitty,” trying to get the small black kitten to come into view high above the western branch of the Elizabeth River.
When asked about her thoughts of the kitten she hears, “cat-astrophic,” she says with a slight smile, but she is also concerned about the kitten.
“I haven’t seen him today … I’m worried. The last time I heard it was last night.”
She insists there’s a small black kitten running around under the West Norfolk Bridge, and she sent us video — if you listen closely you can hear the meowing in the night.
The other video shows Portsmouth Police and Fire showing up Sunday when called to check out the kitty. It so happens a young boy and his mother were below the bridge when they looked up and saw the kitten.
Misty says she was told the decision was made to not attempt a rescue because it was too dangerous.
Misty says she made calls Monday, “I called the police department, the fire department, the Coast Guard, VDOT, animal control and nobody has done nothing.”
Misty says the kitten runs along a small ledge on the steel beam from one concrete support to another.
10 On Your Side went up on the bridge to check the areas where the kitten was heard.
We too made cat noises trying to bring out the kitten and went to the crevice where the kitten likely fell to call him. We even went to get cat food to entice the kitten to make an appearance, but with no luck.
We dropped the cat food down through the crevice to the concrete support hoping at least that the kitten has something to eat.
So Misty Fanney will keep watch until it’s dark to see if the kitten comes back, and we will keep you updated on any developments. She hopes the kitten isn’t dead.
You might be wondering how did the kitty get under the bridge.
Misty Fanney thinks it’s possible the kitten was part of a litter that was left along the road, “I think that because another kitten was found down the road.”
We asked her what she has named the kitten she hears meowing every night, “Well, if it’s a girl, ‘Bridge-it’ and of it’s a boy ‘Piling’ or ‘Jeff Bridges.’ “
