PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth Police say crime is down. Police Chief Stephen Jenkins says Portsmouth has seen more than a 17% reduction in crime in the second quarter.
At the quarterly forum, the police chief says his goal is for people who call Portsmouth their home to feel safe in the city.
These statistics are taken from April 1 to June 30.
“These numbers are in comparison with that same time frame of 2024. So as you will see, as it’s going to be a national trend across the country, but also within our region that our numbers as it relates to our crime, property crimes specifically, are trending in a positive direction,” said Chief Jenkins.
Vehicle theft and shoplifting are additionally down. The police chief added they partnered with Hyundai and Kia to provide drivers with vehicle locks.
From April to June, robberies decreased by 50%. Homicides and murders are down by 10 compared to last year’s 24. With violent crime, aggravated assault was the only increase in the city.
“Any time that we have a breakage of skin, whether it be a domestic busted lip, a stabbing, or things of that nature, I can tell you that during this time frame so far, year to date, we’ve had about 39 people who have been shot in the city of Portsmouth as compared to 37 for the same period in 2024,” said Chief Jenkins.
With an overall goal to see a 20% reduction, Police Jenkins credits several programs working to lower the crime rates. One is called the Strategic Anti-Violence Enforcement or SAVE Unit; it is targeting gun violence head-on.
“We’ve started with those very low-lying crimes, such as brandishing actions, and are now taking that onus off that citizen to be able to go. And we’re following up on every single lead as a result of a gun crime and specifically targeting those who are likely to retaliate in situations that have happened,” said Chief Jenkins.
The second is called PowerEngage, which will text callers that an officer is on its way.
“That officer obviously is tasked with addressing all of your needs and concerns to the best of their ability,” said Chief Jenkins.
Next Tuesday at Freedom Festival Park, Portsmouth Police will have its annual National Night Out.
“It is our opportunity for police, law enforcement, public safety, and the community to come together,” said Chief Jenkins.
