Police: Suspect in early morning chase shot at officers

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The suspect in an early morning police chase that spanned two cities fired a shot at officers, police officials say.

Detective K.R Pacheco with the Chesapeake Police Department says officers stopped someone driving a vehicle described as a silver Ford Mustang for a traffic violation around 4:25 a.m. Tuesday on South Military Highway.

Pacheco says the driver did not stop, and a chase led police into Portsmouth.

Portsmouth police spokeswoman Misty Holley says the chase ended around 4:30 a.m. in the 2800 block of Victory Boulevard — between George Washington Highway (Route 17) and Greenwood Drive.

According to Pacheco, the suspect turned into a trailer park and fled on foot. The suspect fired a shot at officers before getting away; no officers were injured.

Images from the scene showed several bullet holes in the windshield of a Chesapeake police cruiser. A dark gray Ford Mustang could be seen in front of the police car.

“The next thing I know, I hear bam, bam, bam, bam … you know that quick,” said resident Larry Foundes. “I had no idea you know they chased somebody out here.”

A K-9 officer tried to track the suspect, with negative results.

As officers continued to investigate in Portsmouth, Chesapeake police were out in Suffolk at Sandgate Drive. Police say the scenes may be connected.

Virginia State Police were called to head-up the investigation moving forward.

Residents of the Victory Mobile Home Park got an abrupt wake up Tuesday morning.

Joy Lineberry, who lives nearby, said, “I was sound asleep and all of a sudden — bam.  It brought me straight up, straight up out of a dead sleep.”

Gunshots and flashing lights filled the neighborhood.

“Police everywhere,” Lineberry said. “They had the front entrance blocked.  They were checking every car that came in or out.”

Lineberry lives just feet from where today’s chase ended. She said, “I looked out the window and was like ‘oh yeah way too close.’ “

None of the officers are injured — but there are multiple bullet holes in a police car’s windshield.

“They’re here to serve us, not, you know, thank God they were okay,” Lineberry said.
