Police seek man after chase that ended near Portsmouth mobile home park

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Investigators are searching for 35-year-old Jermel McSwain, who police consider armed and dangerous.

They say he is a “person of interest” in a two-city police chase.

The chase started in Chesapeake and ended near a Portsmouth mobile home park Tuesday.

The suspect took off running and shot at police, leaving multiple bullet holes in the windshield of their car.

No officers were hurt, and the suspect got away.

Officers have been looking for him ever since.

Police did return to the same mobile home park on Thursday, but haven’t confirmed they were searching for McSwain.

Court documents reveal there is an attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer charge possible based on the search warrant for McSwain’s gray 2003 Mustang convertible.

The affidavit attached to the warrant says two Chesapeake officers were patrolling near South Military Highway when they saw a car matching one that was involved in a shooting.

That’s when they ran a criminal check, matching the owner of the car with the driver.

It was a positive identification of Jermel McSwain.

Documents say that check identified McSwain had active warrants for a felony and two misdemeanors.

Officials say he has warrants for felony eluding law enforcement, possession of narcotics, and parole violation.

The affidavit says when they tried to pull him over, he fled across city lines into a mobile home park on Victory Boulevard.

That’s when McSwain drew a gun and started firing at the officers while they were still in their police car, according to police.

The search warrant return for the car McSwain got out of shows a connection to drug activity.

Police say they found capsules of white powder, a bag of green plant material, and a bag of white powder in the car.

Records also show a gun, a box of bullets, and hundreds of dollars in cash were also in his car.

Court records show McSwain just got out of jail for resisting arrest, and marijuana possession with intent to distribute.

Officials say he got out of the Norfolk City jail in June of 2016.

However, he still had two years on probation.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Crime Line.

They say if a tip leads to an arrest there could be a reward involved.
