VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WAVY) — Parents of a 24-year-old man killed in a crash earlier this month say their son would want the teenage girl police charged in connection to the incident to be forgiven.
Daniel Nicol, 24, of Virginia Beach was one of two who died in a high speed crash on July 12, according to Virginia Beach Police.
A Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle and Subaru Crosstrek SUV, were racing eastbound on Dam Neck Road around 11 p.m., investigators revealed, and a little ways ahead a Genuine Roughouse50 moped was traveling in the same lane as the Kawasaki.
The motorcycle ran into the back of the moped and both operators were killed.
Bill and Tracy Nicol said their son, Daniel, was on the moped.
“The accident was so violent that we were never able to see him again because it had to be closed casket,” Bill Nicol said.
“I couldn’t even hold my baby one last time,” Tracey Nicol said.
The Nicol’s said you can’t prepare for what they have been through in the last week. Daniel was their youngest son.
“He was easy to like and easy to love,” his father said proudly.
Nicol worked in several different restaurants and pursued becoming a chef for a while. Around the time of his death, he and his brother Ron were beginning to compose music.
His mother, who often referred to him as “Danny Boy” said he was always there for his family.
“I don’t know how to be me anymore,” Tracy Nicol said. “Danny was such a very big part of us.”
A 17-year-old who survived was charged with racing which resulted in the death of another and reckless driving. While police haven’t released her identity, the Nicols said they felt mood to send a message her way: They forgive her.
“That’s is what Danny would want,” Tracy said. “He’s not here enjoying the rest of his life. He wouldn’t want us to hold hate in our heart because the boy didn’t know hate.”
The Nicol’s said they will let the justice system play out.
“Hopefully the young lady can forgive herself too so … if she is remorseful she can pick up her life and carry on.”
