NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – After a historic win over Virginia Tech, many students at Old Dominion University spent Saturday night celebrating.
“Awesome, crazy, 1.8 percent chance,” said ODU student Nicholas Matha of the school’s big win.
Celebrations started immediately after the game. It didn’t take long for them to spread into nearby neighborhoods.
ODU student Evan Woodson said, “It’s basically pretty crazy on this street, we came back after the game and there was a lot of people everywhere.”
Video shared on Twitter shows students in the streets and burning couches.
“Couches burning all down 42nd Street. It was crazy, fires all over, police shut down the whole street,” said Matha.
Norfolk Police say they were called out by ODU Police and the Norfolk Fire Department to assist with crowd control. A spokesman for NPD says the department did not make any arrests.
ODU’s Crime Log lists a couple of arrests in the hours following the big win, including one for arson.
“42nd Street was completely swarming with students, couches were burning, people were throwing down in the street.” said ODU student Josh Gentile. “I saw people trying to tip over cars, it was crazy.”
On Monday, a few couches remained, including one in front of student Alec Emanuel’s house.
He said, “This happened at like 6 in the morning. I was actually asleep when this one got burned.”
Emanuel says the couch wasn’t worth much. “We actually had it right here, in front by our garbage cans because we were just getting rid of it.”
But the memories are priceless.
“It’s fun to kind of move into that same tailgating and celebrating kind of thing that those big schools do. Even though it does bring some repercussions, I think it’s still a lot of fun,” said Emanuel.
