OCRACOKE, N.C. (WAVY) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) closed part of NC12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island Monday afternoon because of “deteriorating conditions.”
Shortly before 4 p.m., NCDOT said it was closing NC12 between the ferry terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens.
An image taken at 3:37 p.m. showed overwash on the road.

The closure continued through the night. NCDOT said it would re-evaluate conditions at first light Tuesday. NCDOT said it was reopening the north end of Ocracoke Island at 9:30 a.m. but advised drivers to use caution, as there would be areas of sand and water on the road.
There are strong wind gusts associated with this system.
Monday afternoon, NCDOT also shared information on an incident at the Basnight Bridge. Part of a modular home blew off its trailer, which resulted in a closure of the bridge. Details here.
A coastal flood advisory was in effect for parts of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and in the Hampton Roads region Monday. The advisory continues into Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is possible.
