MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — After closing May 2024 for scheduled repairs, the William B. Umstead Bridge, also known as the Old Manns Harbor Bridge, is set to reopen sometime in mid-May, according to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
The bridge underwent a $33 million dollar repair project in order to repair all 313 concrete spans on the deck and 170 expansions joints on the 70-year-old bridge. Contractors believe the work will be finished in three to five weeks, in which the bridge will open with single-lane closures.
“We realize it will be an inconvenience for some commuters,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Pablo Hernandez, in an April 2024 release. “However, the safety of both motorists and workers is our top priority, and a complete closure of the bridge is the safest alternative for this type of work.”
While the bridge is closed, NCDOT urges drivers traveling between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island use the Virginia Dare Bridge as an alternate route.
The project is set to be completed in late 2026.
