DARE COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A woman is facing charges after a fatal crash in Dare County Sunday morning.
According to officials, just after 9 a.m., North Carolina State Highway Patrol was dispatched to US-64 near East Lake for reports of a two-vehicle crash.
An investigation revealed that the driver of a Mercedes SUV, 35-year-old Tiffany Phillips, was traveling westbound when she merged into the eastbound lanes in an attempt to pass traffic in front of her. As a result of this, Phillips collided head-on with the driver of a Toyota SUV, who was traveling eastbound.
Troopers said the driver of the Toyota, later identified as 31-year-old Callie Ann Coltrain Coward, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Phillips, who was later charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving, was flown by air to Norfolk General to be treated for her injuries. It is currently unclear the extent of her injuries. One of Phillip’s passengers was flown to Vidant Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and her other passenger, an 8-month-old female, was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital, but is said to have not sustained any injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
