OCRACOKE, N.C. (WAVY) — NC 12 on Hatteras Island reopened around 5 p.m. Monday, but it remains closed on Ocracoke Island due to ocean overwash.
NCDOT’s update Sunday morning noted a nor’easter had brought heavy winds, rain and overwash to the Outer Banks and warned that travel would be dangerous. NCDOT crews have been out working to clear and reopen NC 12.
NC 12 from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe had been closed due to a dune breach causing overwash to cover the highway, and while it is now open, water and sand are still on many areas of the road.
Schools are still affected by the road conditions.
Cape Hatteras Elementary and Cape Hatteras Secondary will operate on a three-hour delay Tuesday, while Hatteras students attending Dare Early College will continue participating virtually. Dare County Schools say the delay will give it extra time to assss road safety across Hatteras Island. It said it would provide updates if schedule changes are needed Tuesday morning.
Trash collection will take place Tuesday and Friday for all areas of Hatteras Island. Residential trash collection in the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avone will resume their normal collection schedule Tuesday. The villages of Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras, which canceled Monday, will resume their normal trash collection schedule Thursday.
The NC 12 closure on Ocracoke Island spans from the ferry terminal to the National Park Service Pony Pens. There is currently no time frame for when NC 12 will reopen in that area.
