OCRACOKE, N.C. (WAVY) – NC 12 is closed near Ocracoke Island following the arrival of the last ferry due to an increasing ocean overwash, according to NCDOT.
NC 12 is closed between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the ferry terminal. Ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands is currently suspended.
NCDOT emphasized the overwash is making roads hazardous for motorists and the road will be closed through Thursday at minimum. The overwash has breached the dune line.
This image from NCDOT was taken Tuesday afternoon.
The hazardous conditions are due to impacts from Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Imelda.
Dare County Public Schools (DCPS) announced an early dismissal day Tuesday for Hatteras students, while Hatteras students attending Dare Early College were dismissed at 12:30 p.m.
In addition, DCPS will hold remote learning Wednesday and Thursday.
Good afternoon,
Wednesday, October 1, 2025 will be a Remote Learning Day for Cape Hatteras Elementary, Cape Hatteras Secondary, and Hatteras students attending Dare Early College, due to continued hazardous road conditions, high waves, and ocean overwash caused by the hurricanes passing offshore.
Students should check their emails for assignments and expectations for the day. Staff members who are unable to work remotely should contact their supervisor for workday options.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we navigate these weather related challenges.
Stay safe,
Dare County Schools
