MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) — Cape Hatteras National Seashore is asking drivers to be cautious on the roadways due to the heavy rainfall the is expected over the next several days.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for eastern North Carolina through 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9.
Seashore urges drivers to be particularly mindful of the high tide conditions in vulnerable areas of N.C. 12 on Wednesday, Aug. 7. due to the potential for overwash at the northern end of Ocracoke Island.
Additionally, drivers should slow down when traveling through low-lying areas of N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island which will likely to contain several inches of standing water.
Off-road vehicles or not recommended on beaches, and visitors should avoid Rodanthe Beach between the north end of Rodanthe and South Shore Drive due to the potential for small-to-large pieces of debris on the beach during and after the storm conditions.
Swimming is also not recommended due to dangerous rip currents that are in the forecast, and while campgrounds are open, campers may experience flooding at low elevation campsites.
