CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Central Elementary School in Currituck was temporarily on a soft lockdown Tuesday as deputies from the sheriff’s office searched for a suspect they say fled from custody.
Officials from Currituck County Schools issued the soft lockdown around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the elementary school. This means movement within the building will not be restricted, however, staff and students will not be permitted outside.
The school continued the same protocols Wednesday, including slight delays in arrival and dismissal procedures.
Deputies are still searching for a suspect who had gotten away from custody and may be in the area.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, later identified as Elizabeth City resident Corey Tyrick Smith, had a warrant for felony larceny out of Pasquotank, and was in the booking area in the process of getting a magistrate order for the warrant when he fled out the door into the wood line by the Maple Detention Center.
Deputies say Smith is handcuffed and last known not to be armed.
The Sheriff’s Office released a picture of Smith.
