CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — An 18-year-old man with special needs who wandered out of his home died after being struck by a car early Thursday morning on Caratoke Highway, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The 18-year-old, who was not wearing a shirt or shoes, had wandered away from his home while his parents were sleeping, the highway patrol said. His parents believe he did have on a shirt upon leaving the residence.
The man, who the North Carolina State Highway Patrol later identified as Shailee Bachar of Moyock, was walking northbound on the southbound side of Caratoke Highway near Commerce Road around 12:16 a.m.. about 2.5 miles away from his home, when he was struck by a GMC Acadia, and he died at the scene.
The driver and passengers in the car had been traveling to the region for a vacation to the region. No charges are expected for the SUV driver, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
