ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — An Elizabeth City man turned a $1 ticket into a $273,520 jackpot, according to the NC Education Lottery.

The lucky ticket was for Multiplier Mania, one of the NC Education Lottery’s digital instant games. William Evans hit the game’s Gold Jackpot, beating the odds of 1 in 14 million.

“I was like, ‘Am I reading this right,” Evans said. “It was kind of nerve-racking.”

After required federal and state tax withholdings, Evans took home $196,251. He said he plans to use his winnings to buy a piece of property.

In the Multiplier Mania digital instant game, a player can play from 50 cents to $30. After Evans won the jackpot, it reset back to $80,000 and is already climbing again.

Digital instant games are played exclusively on the lottery’s website or the official mobile app.
