CURRITUCK, N.C. (WAVY) — Currituck County just hosted its first ever Youth Public Safety Camp last week.
According to a release, the camp, hosted by Currituck County Fire-EMS, allowed kids between the ages of 10-15 to see the work of firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency managers, dispatchers, medics and military responders in the span of five days.
The camp took place between July 21-25, and provided kids with a hands-on learning experience to explore what the various public safety agents do each day. A schedule of the week’s events can be seen below:
- Monday, July 21
- Tour of 911 Communications Center
- Team-based communication drill with Legos
- Meeting with Emergency Management Department staff
- Visiting Emergency Operations Center
- Tuesday, July 22
- “Law Enforcement Day” with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office
- Visiting holding cells and department facilities
- Meeting Sheriff Matt Beickert and Chief Deputy Jeff Walker
- Navigating simulated drunk driving course
- Observing K9 demonstrations
- Target exercise with airsoft guns
- Wednesday, July 23
- Field trip to the United States Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City
- Meeting with personnel from the NC Forest Service
- Brush fire suppression drill
- Thursday, July 24
- Simulation of a day-in-the-life for firefighters
- Competitive skills event
- Friday, July 25
- Emergency Medical Services training
- Camp graduation
- CPR and “Stop the Bleed” training
The release states that on Friday, each camper received a certificate, gear and several gifts from the participating agencies.
“Currituck County thanks each of the participating agencies and partners who made the Youth Public Safety Camp a tremendous success. This initiative would not have been possible without the dedication of our public safety professionals, volunteer fire departments, military and aviation partners, and generous community supporters,” Currituck County officials said.
