BUXTON, N.C. (WAVY) — On Monday, Cape Hatteras National Seashore issued a warning to visitors for expected hazardous weather conditions. They also reminded visitors of the threat to oceanfront structures collapsing in Rodanthe and Buxton.
For Monday night through Wednesday, officials with The National Weather Service are forecasting strong northeasterly wind gusts, large waves, and ocean overwash.
Due to the weather threat, two beaches will be closed due to dozens of structures that may fall apart or collapse. 10 On Your Side has covered multiple homes collapsing due to weather in just the past few months.
In Rodanthe, the beach is closed from East Point Drive south for approximately 0.15 miles to Surfside Drive.
In Buxton, the beach is closed from the northernmost motels and houses south for about 1.5 miles to just north of off-road vehicle ramp 43.
As for people traveling, officials are warning visitors of the potential impacts to N.C. Highway 12 due to ocean overwash.
According to cape Hatteras National Seashore, challenging driving conditions are likely to occur as follows:
- Pea Island Visitor Center
- The north end of Buxton, between Frisco and Hatteras
- Near the north end of Ocracoke Island
