NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Twenty-one-year-old Zachary Smith is behind bars facing a dozen charges including malicious wounding and carjacking.
10 On Your Side dug into court documents that revealed why he was hit with the usually long list of charges.
Back in October, forensic evidence linked Smith to an attempted car jacking on 36th Street in Newport News.
In a criminal complaint, the victim says he gave Smith a ride home and when he dropped him off he walked up to his driver side window and asked him to roll it down.
The victim says he then states, “You already know what it is, give it up.”
The victim says he was pistol whipped during a struggle but managed to put the car in reverse and speed off.
He ended up getting stitches for a gash in his lip.
Smith was actively wanted for the carjacking and police were able to track him down Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. off 31st street and Marshall Avenue.
An affidavit says they tried to pull him over but he sped off recklessly, hitting 80 miles per hour and running through stop lights.
Police say after a 6 minute pursuit, Smith crashed into a parked car and took off on foot.
However, he wasn’t alone.
Paperwork reveals Smith’s 12-year-old cousin was in the front seat.
The boy also ran away from the accident, but officers caught him and turned the child over to his mom.
The affidavit says the Honda Civic that Smith was driving at the time was stolen out of Chesapeake just the day before.
Police say when they caught Smith, they found a gun in his jacket pocket and a baggy of weed.
An affidavit says that gun was also stolen.
In an interview, Smith denied taking the car and gun, but admitted he knew they were stolen.
