Carrier Lincoln to change homeport in upcoming deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) is getting ready to leave Naval Station Norfolk for a deployment that will include a homeport change.

U.S. Navy officials said in a news release the carrier and nearly 6,000 sailors with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group will deploy Monday, April 1.

Deploying ships will include the guided-missile destroyers USS Bainbridge (DDG 96), USS Mason (DDG 87), and USS Nitze (DDG 94); the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55); and the Spanish frigate ESPS Mendez Nunez (F 104)

Nine squadrons from Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW 7) will also deploy, as well as the staffs of Carrier Strike Group Twelve (CSG 12) and Destroyer Squadron Two (DESRON 2).

Officials said the Lincoln will go around the world during the deployment to support a homeport change from Norfolk to San Diego.

The Navy announced the Lincoln’s move to San Diego in August, noting the USS John C. Stennis will homeport in Norfolk for its midlife refueling.

The Lincoln is rejoining the Pacific fleet, where it served from 1990-2011 after being commissioned in 1989.
