VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Multiple military families living at Wadsworth Shores, an off-base housing complex managed by Liberty Military Housing, say they are living in unsafe and unlivable conditions — and their complaints are growing louder.
10 On Your Side first spoke Thursday with Kylee Leahy and Jacob Card, two residents raising families at the complex. Since then, more families have come forward, reporting similar issues including mold, flooding, pest infestations and broken air conditioning units during the peak of summer heat.
“I know there’s people in this neighborhood who are dealing with no AC at all … dealing with 85-plus-degree temperatures in their home,” said resident Ezekiel Stahr, a father to a 9-month-old daughter.
Stahr described the conditions as unbearable, saying there are days he dreads coming home.
“I came home once. I picked up my nine-month-old daughter, and she was sticky with sweat and humidity,” he said. “We couldn’t do it anymore. Housing doesn’t really give you much of a solution.”
In addition to the heat, some residents say they are dealing with mice and cockroach infestations.
“Bugs are awful here,” Stahr said. “We have roaches. They come out probably monthly to spray, and there’s no getting away from them. You just get accustomed to seeing roaches in your house.”
Military resident Jacob Card called the conditions “horrible.” He told WAVY he chose Wadsworth Shores to give his family a better life after joining the military.
“I’ve been trying to get out, and I can’t get out because they’re going to charge me,” Card said. “Money’s tight.”
Liberty Military Housing, which manages the property, responded to WAVY in a written statement, saying they are committed to “compassionate customer service” and ensuring families live in a safe and healthy environment.
Rep. Jen Kiggans also responded to the complaints, calling the reports from Wadsworth Shores “deeply concerning.”
“Our military families deserve safe, clean, and comfortable housing,” Kiggans said. “I’ve been in contact with Navy leadership and Liberty Military Housing and am working to make sure these issues are addressed quickly and thoroughly. I will continue advocating for the health and well-being of every military family in coastal Virginia.
“Families who serve our nation should never have to worry about the safety of their homes. They deserve better, and I’m committed to being their number one advocate.”
Liberty Military Housing has agreed to an interview with 10 On Your Side.
In the meantime, residents say they are hoping change comes soon.
