PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A pilot program several commissaries in Hampton Roads were selected to participate in is being extended.
In December, WAVY reported that 16 Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) stores across the United States would be a part of a 120 day test to expand commissary shopping for DOD civilian employees. The stores were chosen based on criteria such as store size and geography.
On April 8, DeCA announced it was extending the pilot program to allow civilian employees to shop at these select commissaries until Dec. 31, 2025. The program was originally slated to end on April 4.
In Hampton Roads, Joint Base Langley-Eustis (Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base Commissaries), Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (Little Creek Commissary), Naval Base Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana and Norfolk Naval Ship Yard (Portsmouth), are part of the pilot.
According to a release, the objective of expanding access to DoD civilians at stateside commissaries was to help provide savings through increased sales volume, lower pricing and increased supplier promotions.
The program does not include benefit access for family members of DoD civilian employees and former or retired DoD civilian employees, the purchase of tobacco or alcohol products and Commissary CLICK2GO online shopping privileges.
