YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – Officials with the York County government have announced that smoke testing will be conducted in select areas over the next two weeks as part of HRSD’s “Reducing Rainwater in the Sanitary Sewer System” Program.

According to officials, this work will help identify where repairs are needed to improve sewer performance and reduce any rainwater infiltration.

Residents should expect to see crews from Burns & McDonnell and RJN in multiple areas during this period, accompanied by trucks and signage.

Property owners who will be impacted by this smoke testing are said to have been notified by mail, and will receive a door hanger with contractor information 48 hours before testing begins.

During this testing, non-toxic artificial smoke will be blown into manholes to check for holes, cracks and poor connections in pipes and roof leaders. The smoke in question is not harmful to either humans nor pets.

If smoke does enter your home, officials say you should call the number listed on the door hanger, open windows to allow for ventilation and attempt to locate where the leak is coming from.
