GREENSVILLE COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — An 80-year-old Emporia woman has died following a crash Tuesday, Virginia State Police said.

Merle Marie Thorpe, 80, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala southbound on Low Ground Road in Greensville County when she crossed over into the northbound lanes and drove off the road, State Police said. When the car drove off the road, it struck a tree stump and overturned, trapping Thorpe.

Thorpe, who was the only person in the car, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken to Southern Virginia Regional Center in Emporia and was later flown to Chippenham Hospital, where she later died.

State Police said she was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash, they said.
