VIRIGNIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — StillStanding is putting on its first annual community outreach and memorial walk in Virginia Beach in light of Suicide Awareness Month.

The event is free and is scheduled for Sept. 15 at Bayville Farms Park from noon to 4 p.m. Registrations is from noon to 1 p.m.

StillStanding is a local Virginia nonprofit organization 501(c)3 created to help support those who have been affected by depression and/or loss from suicide.

StillStanding was founded by Kathy Damon and Elaine Roberts. Elaine lost her daughter 15-year-old Kaila to suicide 20 years ago.

“Depression took Kaila’s life,” a release states. “Kaila’s artwork and poetry will be displayed on the t-shirts for the Walk and available for purchase online and onsite. She was a 9th grader at Cox H.S. and was fun and funny, loved strawberries and the color purple. She was an artist, poet and a surfer.”

This event includes speakers, resource tables and therapists. There will also be live music and face painting, henna tattoos and raffle items.

Donations and sponsors are welcomed. You will get a t-shirt with a $100 donation. T-shirts are available online as well for $25-27. There will be a limited number of t-shirts for sale.
