VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – In response to rising flood risks, nine members of the Virginia Beach Fire Department’s Swift Water Team (SWT) deployed to Lebanon, Virginia, on Feb. 13 at the request of local officials seeking to bolster support for potential flooding in the western part of the Commonwealth.

While in Lebanon, the team participated in critical training drills on Thursday to prepare for challenges posed by winter storms.

Drills included riverboat operations and an overview of the Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (HART) program, ensuring the team was ready to handle emergencies.

On Feb. 15, the SWT faced a demanding day in Richland, Virginia, conducting water evacuations and lifesaving rescues as the Clinch River reached its 100-year flood mark.

Over five hours, they evacuated 24 individuals and conducted four urgent rescues, demonstrating their commitment in the face of adversity.

The team is preparing for another deployment to Richland as forecasts predict further rises in the river.

Reports indicate that the SWT remains in good spirits, showcasing their resilience and dedication to community safety during these challenging times.
