VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A domestic dispute turned violent Sunday night in the Lago Mar neighborhood of Virginia Beach, as someone was shot by a Virginia Beach Police officer Sunday night, police said.

10 On Your Side has been told officers shot and wounded a man with a knife.

According to police, officers were called to the 2400 block of Brasileno Drive at 10:17 p.m. for the report of a domestic dispute in what residents say is normally a quiet Lago Mar neighborhood. When officers arrived on scene, they encountered an person, later identified as Gokhan Karabulut, 39, armed with a knife, holding it to the throat of another person, police said.

An officer fired his weapon, striking Karabulut, police said.

Karabulut was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. No officers or other people were injured.

Karabulut has since been charged with abduction, strangulation, child endangerment and domestic assault. The involved officer was placed on critical incident leave.

Karabulut has since been arraigned and is set to appear for a bond hearing on May 1.

This incident is being investigated by the Detective Bureau and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

Chuck Gagnon lives a mile or so away from where police responded.

“And I just heard a lot of sirens, Gagnon said. “I came outside to see if I could — I’m an acoustic guy so I came outside to see if it was worth recording.”

Neighbors say 20 to 25 patrol cars responded to Brasileno Drive, and a neighbor said off-camera they saw crews wheeling Karabulut out on a stretcher and that he was sitting up. Neighbors said police were on the scene until at least 2:30 Monday morning.

Aside from the occasional news crew, Lago Mar appears to have returned to normal Monday afternoon.

10 On Your Side also spoke with a woman who says the person who was shot was her neighbor and said the family is very sweet and declined to say anything on camera, but she did say she was glad no one was killed.
