VBFD Swift Water Rescue Team saves 28 lives amid severe flooding emergency

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia Beach Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team safely returned home Monday afternoon after an intense four-day mission in the western part of the Commonwealth.

The team and other first responders worked tirelessly in response to a devastating storm that caused heavy downpours and extreme flooding. These dangerous conditions washed out roadways, flooded entire towns, and destroyed homes, businesses, and vehicles.


During their mission, the dedicated team rescued 28 individuals from rising floodwaters and ensured their safe evacuation.

The community is fortunate to have such a skilled and professional team of water rescue swimmers whose training and expertise make a life-saving difference when called upon during times of crisis.
