VB Sheriff’s ‘New Beginning Program’ offers second chance opportunity for former inmates

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A former inmate at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center (VBSO) has found her “New Beginning” at the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office’s kitchen.

According to a release, Wendy Morelli, was part of VBCC’s Trusty Program, where staff said she demonstrated reliability and a strong work ethic. Through Sheriff Rocky Holcomb’s “New Beginning Program,” former inmates, such as Morelli, are able to be considered for work within VBSO’s food services division.

“The New Beginning Program is about offering a genuine second chance,” Holcomb said. “We believe in rehabilitation and providing pathways for inmates to reintegrate into the community as productive members of society. Wendy’s journey is a testament to the program’s success and her own hard work and commitment.”

Morelli, who was released in good standing on Dec. 13, 2023 after serving one year and 16 days, now has full clearance to work at VBSO.

“We saw Wendy’s dedication firsthand when she was a trusty, and we’re thrilled to have her join our team,” VBSO’s Food Service Director with Summit Food Service Steve Wilke said. “This program shows that with the right support, individuals can truly transform their lives and contribute positively to our community.”

A release states that Morelli, with 27 years under her belt in the food service industry, was able to receive her ServSafe Food Handler and Management Certification on June 20 through Holcomb. Morelli is excited for the opportunity, saying, “my old life is behind me.”
