UPDATE: Council approved the funding.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Council will vote Monday night to determine if the Virginia Aquarium Foundation will receive $40,000.

The city of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Aquarium are part of an ongoing partnership aiming to find a way to operate the attraction more efficiently. The aquarium is looking to use the money received from the city to help bring on board Canopy Strategic Partners.

According to Canopy’s website, the group is “dedicated to helping mission-driven organizations, including zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, conservation organizations, and other public green spaces, create a better future for the planet.”

As previously reported, parts of the aquarium have reached the end of their useful life and need millions of dollars in repairs. Virginia Beach City Council is currently asking the city manager to delay other capital projects due to cost overruns.
