VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Crews responded to a fire in the Landstown area of Virginia Beach Monday night.

According to officials, crews were called to the 1500 block of Big Boulder Drive at 7:46 p.m. for the report of a two-story residential fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the left side of the home.

Neighbors told 10 On Your Side they came running as soon as they saw and smelled the smoke because they knew a woman who lived there was in a wheelchair and could be trapped.

“That was the biggest concern with the neighbors in here was [getting] the lady out of the house,” said neighbor Keith Camper. “And that because I’ve seen him take her in the house and it’s difficult with a wheelchair. I don’t think the house is really wheelchair efficient.”

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and marked it out at 9:11 p.m.

Thankfully the woman and her son got out. The two were taken to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns. No firefighters or pets were injured.

10 On Your Side saw the woman getting into her husband’s truck late Tuesday morning to go to her dialysis treatment. She felt too weak to talk. Her husband, Herbert Dulas, who was not home at the time of the fire, did talk briefly.

“She’s alright, and my stepson [too],” he said.

Fire officials said the fire was an accident and started in the kitchen. The lesson learned, they said, is to never leave food cooking on a stove unattended.
