One step at a time a Virginia Beach boy, shot in the head, is learning to walk again

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Landyn Davis this month stood unassisted for the first time since he was shot in the head more than one year ago, and then, using a gait trainer, he took his first steps.

10 On Your Side met with Landyn and his mother days after the major breakthrough.

Regina Mobley: Mom, what was your reaction when you saw Landyn walk?

Emily Rigsby: Speechless. He’s been working really hard because he wanted to go back to school this year.

Last February, three young men fired at least 27 bullets while hunting a rival on Peele Court. A .45 caliber bullet pierced Landyn’s head and settled above the right ear. That’s where the bullet will remain for the rest of his life. But, says his mother, Landyn will not remain disabled.

“And he’s actually going back [to school] this year with his wheelchair, but he’s still going to work hard,” she said.

And that includes math. Landyn enjoys solving equations and adding three-to-four digit numbers without using notes.

While Landyn is on the mend, an unknown number of children remain emotionally broken by gun violence.

This Saturday, Bayside Harley Davidson In Portsmouth will host Ride the Rhyme of the Islands to support the Landyn Davis Foundation. The fun kicks off Saturday morning with a motorcycle ride followed by live music, food and fun. Hosea Sawyer is the event organizer.

“Music starts at 1:30, so we’re going to have everything from, positive hip hop to reggae,” said event organizer Hosea Sawyer. “We’re just gonna make sure we capture the full flavor of the roots.”

All proceeds will go to Landyn’s Foundation to help other families and children who are affected by gun violence. For more information on the event dial 757-309-5529.
