ODU provides free health screenings and school supplies in Virginia Beach

WAVY’s Operation School Supplies is underway. Click here for details on this year’s initiative.

VIRGINA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Back to school season is approaching quickly and on Tuesday, July 22, ODU’s community Care Team will offer free K-12 health and sports physicals along with school supplies at their annual back-to-school event.

For students enrolling in public school for the first time, a physical is required. For athletes, there is a separate examination needed to participate in sports and marching band annually. Parents won’t have to worry though, as insurance and identification for this FREE event are not required.

On Tuesday, from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the ODU Virginia Beach Higher Ed Center, attendees will also be able to get free dental and mental health screenings, access to non-perishable food items and snack bags.

This event will also include raffles to win various school supplies and educational materials on nutrition and teen health.

Tammy Speerhas, director of ODU Community Care, said this is an event her team looks forward to every year and that the mission extends beyond back-to-school exams.

“In addition to free physicals, we also offer a range of services that address other barriers to wellness, including food insecurity,” she added.

ODU Community Care, housed within the Ellmer School of Nursing, uses a patient-centered model to provide healthcare and health education to rural, underserved and unhoused communities.

Over 80 ODU students in the related health disciplines will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience under the supervision of faculty helping to facilitate the various services for the event.

ODU’s Big Blue will also be in attendance for pictures from 2:30-4 p.m.

Although appointments are not required, they are strongly encouraged. To secure a spot, use this form.
