VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A big milestone on a project is making a splash in Virginia Beach.

WAVY has learned three fire hydrants were used to pump millions of gallons of water into the new Atlantic Park 2.67 acre Surf Park. As of Thursday, June 12, the surf lagoon was completely filled.

The Surf Lagoon has the ability to create waves as high as seven-feet and as low as one-foot.

Here’s video of the water being pumped into the surf park Monday, June 9.

There is no official opening date yet, but the website is already selling surf vouchers and gift cards for the 2025 season and says it’s expected to open by mid-summer.

According to a release, the Wavegarden Cove Surf Lagoon will be the first of its kind in the entirety of North America.

“Centrally located and integrated within an urban environment adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic Park is unlike any other surf park in the world,” Blake Hess, COO of surf park operator Beach Street said. “With the 46-module Cove making waves, Atlantic Park Surf offers unlimited profiles to cater to all levels.”

With 1,000 waves per-hour and 20 different types of waves, the surf lagoon is great for both beginners and experts in surfing alike.

“Atlantic Park in Virginia Beach is super important to us, as it’s the first Wavegarden Cove in the U.S.,” Fernando Odriozola, Wavegarden’s Chief Commercial Officer and co-founder said. “More importantly, it illustrates how our wave pools can transform the entire community landscape, creating a sports and entertainment hub that brings people together and enhances business, lifestyle and tourism. We comment our development partners, city officials and supporters for their foresight in making this dream a reality.”

The Dome, the entertainment venue at Atlantic Park, just opened in early May.

Once complete, the entire mixed-use project will also include shopping and dining. It’s the largest public-private partnership in city history. The surf lagoon is expected to be the centerpiece of the entire $350 million Atlantic Park development, according to a release.
