VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach firefighters responded to a large fire on McCullough Lane on Monday night.
Dispatchers said the call reporting the fire came in at 8:21 p.m. in the 1500 block of McCullough Lane, which is in the Alanton neighborhood, fire officials said.
The fire appeared to be at a house on a point of land across the water from First Landing State Park, near the Narrows.
The Virginia Beach Fire Department said the large home was “fully involved” with fire when units arrived. Those who arrived first were told it would be a “defensive operation” because of how large the fire was.
Crews worked on both land and from a fire boat to extinguish the blaze. Space was limited on the access roadway, and responders were warned that space for equipment and water availability would be a challenge. About 40 firefighters responded to the scene.
The fire was brought under control around 9:30 p.m.
There were no reports of injuries.
The fire department confirmed the home was unoccupied when the fire broke out. It has been undergoing a major remodel.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
