VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man will spend 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter after a multi-vehicle crash killed a 58-year-old man on North Great Neck Road in 2021.
According to officials, on Oct. 4, 2021, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of North Great Neck Road for reports of a vehicle crash.
An investigation revealed that the driver of a Ford truck, later identified as Ronald W. Dozier, was traveling northbound when he veered into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on. 58-year-old John Hefti died as a result of the crash.
Several months later, in January of 2022, Dozier was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the crash.
On May 19, 2025, according to court records, Dozier was ultimately sentenced to 90 days in jail with a five-year probation after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
According to the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Dozier was sentenced to ten years with nine years and nine months suspended, leaving all but 90 days to serve.
“This loss of life has a significant impact on the victim’s family and the community. There were serious evidentiary issues in this case. After discussing it with the victim’s family, it was determined that a plea agreement with a cap of one (1) year was the best course of action. The Commonwealth asked for an active sentence of 1 year,” said Macie Allen with the CA’s office.
