VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man was shot and killed in Virginia Beach Friday evening, according to police.

Virginia Beach police said a call came in around 7:10 p.m. for a gunshot wound in the 400 block of Osprey Street.

10 On Your Side spoke to a close family friend, who says the victim’s name was Joshua. We reached out to VBPD for confirmation but have yet to hear back.

Police confirmed Monday that the victim’s name is Joshua Rice, 20, of Virginia Beach, who died at the scene.

“Joshua is a very sweet kid. I had the privilege, the privilege of seeing him grow, change, learn and become someone full of potential kindness and light. His presence brought joy. His laughter was unforgettable in the journey of his life,” said the neighbor.

The suspect is currently at large.

“People lost a loved one today,” said Jody Saunders, public information officer for the Virginia Beach Police Department. “There’s families whose lives are irrevocably destroyed right now and we just don’t want to see that anymore.”

A memorial was held on Saturday with loved ones laying flowers, candles and balloons to remember Joshua, who neighbors say recently turned 20.

“He just turned 20 on the first. And, you know, before he walked away from my son, he told my son to make him some Kool-Aid. He was coming back, I guess that would be never,” said the neighbor.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene, and the public was advised to avoid the area.

There are no additional details at this time.
