VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach has a new entertainment epicenter on the horizon, as the Dome has been resurrected in the heart of the Oceanfront, and while doors officially open Sunday, local residents and music lovers got a sneak peak during a community preview Friday.
It’s a celebration three decades in the making.
The city-owned venue will be operated in partnership with Live Nation, with the new Dome sited on the footprint of the former venue that closed in 1994. It was known for iconic musical acts, and though the new building doesn’t have the dome-like design, city leaders hope a new legacy can be built under this roof.
“This is going to be a wow factor that’s going to be a real focal point for people to come and enjoy Virginia Beach,” Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer said.
After 30 years, the Dome returns as a indoor-outdoor music hall. Many can already imagine the entertainment this will bring.
“The size of the building is really nice,” said resident Kristina Minitt. “Everything looks really nice, top of the line, top of the arts — sound system is booming, it looks great.”
“This is a good surprise,” said resident Courtney Rivera. “It’s beautiful, something different out in Virginia Beach, something we needed almost. It’s an upgrade, something new and exciting out here.”
Many foresee the Dome having an economic boost for the Oceanfront and beyond, as doors are opening just in time for a busy season, with musical acts already booked far beyond the summer.
“We got a great lineup for the entire summer,” Dyer said, “and wait ’till next year and all the other years after this. We’re bringing top entertainment right here, and don’t forget, this is not only for the visitors, this is for the people of Virginia Beach. The Dome is their building.”
It’s a trip back in time to start anew.
Three Dog Night, the band that played at the former venue’s last show, will christen the new dome, returning to the stage there Sunday.
