VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A pedestrian died Wednesday night after she was hit by a car in the southbound lanes of South Independence Boulevard.

The crash was in the 400 block, between Edwin Drive and Baxter Road, police said. Dispatchers said the call reporting the crash came in at 8:24 p.m.

On Thursday morning, Virginia Beach Police confirmed a 41-year-old woman was hit by the vehicle and died from her injuries at the scene. She’s been identified as Dawn McClaren. Police said McClaren was walking along South Independence Boulevard with her 11-year-old son and the family’s rottweiler.

The dog was also struck. A veterinary assistant who works at BluePearl Emergency Vet across the street told 10 On Your Side she took the dog to the clinic for his injuries. He was later transferred to another vet office where he could be monitored overnight.

10 On Your Side was told the boy’s grandmother took him home.

The driver of the vehicle that struck McClaren remained on the scene. There are currently no pending charges.
