VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Saturday, community leaders and fellow first responding agencies offered their condolences to the Virginia Beach Police Department. Two of their officers are dead after being shot during a traffic stop late Friday night.
VBPD was conducting the stop at 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive in the Green Run section of the city, according to a police spokesperson.
Neighbors off Lynnhaven Parkway were shocked by what happened overnight. Marcus Burton said he heard the initial gunshots.
“Last night, I was about to go to bed, heard a couple of shots… didn’t pay attention,” he explained. “Heard a few more, looked out my window, seen a guy walking through the alleyway. The next thing you know, the whole neighborhood’s full of cops.”
Burton said the swarm of police officers that followed made him feel confident they would find who was responsible. When he heard what happened to the officers, it made him think of his own family.
“I have family that is retired… a police officer, uncle of mine, actually,” he said. “It’s a little scary, you know. It’s sad they didn’t get to go home.”
Another neighbor, Micka Carden, said she couldn’t believe it was happening in what she called her quiet neighborhood.
“My son was a police officer when he was in the Army,” said Carden. “My husband, myself, we all served in the military. So we really believe in the military, really believe in the police officers. And it’s just terrible that this happened… it’s awful.”
Since the deadly incident, law enforcement agencies, leaders, and others have offered their condolences.
