VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Sunday was the second day of the Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo at the Oceanfront. It’s held annually for artist to share and sell their pieces with visitors on the boardwalk.
This weekend was Seth Hinton’s first time as a vendor at the expo. Childhood trips to the Oceanfront shaped his life, and now he’s back where it all started.
“I actually grew up about three hours inland,” Hinton explained. “My family used to vacation out here, and, we came during ECSC years and years ago. I saw guys out there surfing. I grew up with my father pushing me on the boogie board and we just didn’t have money for a surfboard.”
So Hinton started making his own. He rode the wave of inspiration into adulthood and landed right back here the Virginia Beach Surf Art Expo.
He’s been shaping boards for the last 16 years.
Hinton’s not the only wood working artist on the block this year though, Timothy Steller from Florida made the trip up the coast.
“This is my first year, I came all the way up from southwest Florida for this,” he said. “I was down in Tampa and another vendor said I needed to look into this and I saw it and was like I need to be there.”
He and other vendors have success stories as long as the boardwalk when asked about sales. To find your perfect piece, you can head to 16th street in Virginia Beach on Monday for the last day of the Surf Art Expo.
