MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — An individual was reportedly sitting in their bedroom in Mathews County when a bullet went through their window on Wednesday morning.

Around 2 a.m. on March 26, deputies with the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of Cricket Hill Road in the Hudgins area of Mathews County.

A victim reported that while sitting in their bedroom, someone fired a projectile through their window. The victim then hid and later discovered someone had fired a shot at the windshield of their vehicle parked next to the residence.

Deputies and investigators responded to collect evidence and document the scene. The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office conducted a wide canvas of the area at the time of the investigation. Information collected during the course of the investigation led investigators to focus on a suspect who lives in the same area.

On Thursday, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office executed an arrest warrant and residential search warrant at the home of Ronald Lee Hudgins Jr., 50 of Hudgins, Virginia.

Numerous items believed to be linked to the shooting were recovered. Suspected evidence of unrelated crimes was also recovered for submission to the Virginia Department of Forensic Science for analysis.

Hudgins was arrested and charged with:

  • § 18.2-279: Discharging firearms or missiles within or at an occupied building or dwelling house.

Additional charges are pending.

Hudgins is currently being held without bond at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center.
