PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Much of the region saw snow overnight, from the Eastern Shore to Hampton — but now, it’s the icy conditions that people will need to look out for.
In an effort to mitigate the chances for icy conditions, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) put down over 20 tons of brine on the roads, but with the rain continuing to come down into the early morning, motorists are urged to watch for icy spots while driving.
WAVY viewers all across the region sent in photos of last night’s snow — a sight Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler said we haven’t seen in well over 1,000 days.
10 On Your Side’s Deja Parker was out in Suffolk Monday morning, where a former wintry mix turned into a cold rain.
Meanwhile, up in the Historic Triangle, the world was looking a bit more like a winter wonderland for WAVY’s Brett Hall.
Early Monday morning, the weather conditions caused the east and west exit 243B on I-64 near Busch Gardens to close.
With chances for the water to refreeze Monday night, drivers are asked to look for slick spots and icy patches. As of Sunday, Virginia State Police said they saw an increase in crashes as the storm approached the region — with officers investigating seven crashes in the Hampton Roads region.
Officials with VSP said two of the crashes have reported injuries, and that one has been reported as a fatal crash. 10 On Your Side has reached out for more information on the crashes.
AAA has provided a list of safe driving tips during winter conditions:
- Only go out when necessary
- Drive slowly
- Accelerate and decelerate slowly
- Increase following distance
