NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — 21-year-old Amari Maxwell passed away following a shooting on Tuesday. His dad, Carlos Russell spoke with 10 On Your Side in remembrance of him.

“I’m a music person, and he loved music. He made songs. He recorded songs like almost every day. So, music was a big part. He cared about music, sports and the Ladies. He loved, you know, he liked to have a little girlfriend,” Russell said.

On Tuesday afternoon, Maxwell was with his girlfriend. He was walking along a sidewalk when he noticed a guy he had an argument with a year and a half ago.

Russell received a FaceTime call from a neighbor in reference to a shooting that involved his son.

“I got a call from a neighbor. I mean, it was kind of disturbing as a FaceTime call. He said, ‘you need to get down here. I think it’s your son,’ and I was like, ‘oh, show me,’ and he showed me the image on FaceTime, and I saw Amari laying on the ground. I ran downstairs and that’s when I got his FaceTime.”

Russell hoped his son survived his injuries.

“I was just praying and hoping that he’d be okay. It didn’t look good. Like I know it didn’t look good right there, but I was trying to be optimistic.”

Russell had an indescribable emptiness following the discovery of his son being shot.

“I was hoping that this was just a terrible nightmare. I’m like, this can’t be real. It really didn’t hit me until I went to the hospital. They had the hospital on some type of lockdown for security,” said Russell.

Russell shared his son’s passions and interests.

“He loved his family and football, and working at McDonalds. He had busy hands, working full-time, 40 hours, beginning at 16 years of age. He had been there 5 years,” Russell said.

“He kept a McDonald’s job because he said that that was his family,” Russell added. “Like he loved working there, like they had like a close-knit family here at the McDonald’s.”

The location of Maxwell’s vigil has changed from the McDonald’s he worked at to the football field where he played at. It will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the South Morrison Family Education Center at 746 Adams Drive in Newport News.

Police are still in search of Maxwell’s killer.
