NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A swimming advisory has been issued at a Newport News beach.

The Peninsula Health District says the advisory is in place at King-Lincoln Beach. Water samples show bacteria levels exceeding the state water quality standard at this beach.

Warning signs are posted, telling the public to avoid swimming until further notice.

Health districts routinely monitor recreational waters during the summer season using enterococci as an indicator of fetal contamination.

Exposure can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illness for swimmers.

“We encourage the public to protect their health by complying with this advisory,” said Mary Wainwright, Environmental Health Manager of the Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts. “Typically, an advisory of this nature is temporary and will be withdrawn once the bacteria levels have returned to a safe level.”
