VSP: 1 dead following crash on I-664 in Suffolk

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A person has died following a crash in Suffolk early Tuesday morning.

According to Virginia State Police, the two-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer took place just after 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 664 at College Drive.


Southbound lanes were shutdown at the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel as a result of the crash. The lanes have since reopened. Detours were placed at exit 8B until lanes could reopen.

An investigation revealed that the driver of a 2023 Volkswagen, later identified as 39-year-old Corey L. B. Knight, pulled off the the right shoulder and activated his emergency lights. While standing outside his car, the driver of a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer struck both Knight and his vehicle.

Police said Knight was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Commonwealth Attorney of Suffolk will continue to investigate the crash to determine if charges will be given to the driver of the tractor-trailer.
