1 dead, 2 in critical condition after multi-vehicle crash in Suffolk

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – The Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue responded to a two vehicle crash on Portsmouth Boulevard early Monday morning that resulted in a fatality.

According to officials, crews were notified at 7:01 a.m. of a two-vehicle crash on Portsmouth Boulevard and C Street, just outside of downtown Suffolk.

An investigation determined that the first vehicle was occupied by two individuals, and the second vehicle was only occupied by the driver. The first vehicle was traveling westbound on Portsmouth Boulevard before colliding with the second vehicle.

All three individuals sustained life-threatening injuries. Two occupants were ground transported to a local hospital.

The third individual, later identified as 52-year-old Ray Fulayter of Chesapeake, was airlifted via Nightingale, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The westbound lanes of Portsmouth Boulevard remained closed for hours Monday, as well as the Route 58 westbound Downtown Suffolk exit. A detour was in place.

The crash remains under investigation.
