SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Suffolk Fire & Rescue unveiled their new 22,000 square footage fire station, Suffolk Fire Station 11, Friday morning at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The facility will provide coverage to North Suffolk, housing 45 firefighters, officers, and paramedics that will staff an engine company, ladder company, heavy rescue company, ALS ambulance, an EMS supervisor and a VDEM Regional Hazmat Office.
The station was a part of a $12 million project that broke ground on Aug. 2023.
Suffolk Fire Chief Mike Barakey gave 10 On Your Side a tour in March, as he explained the need for a new fire station.
“So the closest fire station in north Suffolk right now is Station 5, which is over on Bridge Road on Route 17,” Barakey said, “and to get where we are now, travel time alone is seven minutes.”
With Station 11, travel time is expected to be cut down to two minutes.
