SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Suffolk ranks as the highest percentage of men dying in car crashes compared to women in a locality, a new study reveals.

Nearly 90% of all fatal car crashes in Suffolk were men, according to High Rise Legal Funding. Between 2017-2021, 88.89% of those involved in fatal crashes were men. The statistics revealed that there was a total of 54 deaths with 48 of them being male.

A spokesperson from High Rise Legal Funding said the finding highlighted “the disparity in fatal crashes between men and women, and this is most likely due to different behaviors towards driving between genders.”

Out of the 906 localities analyzed, only one county had a higher percentage of female fatalities.

“Furthermore, according to CNN, men are more likely to drive recklessly or drive in vehicles with higher horsepower compared to women – and this ultimately can increase the chances of fatal collisions and accidents.”
