No one was injured.
Lightning struck the home just after 9 p.m. Friday, and firefighters were dispatched at 9:10 p.m., Barakey said. When crews arrived eight minutes later, there was heavy fire and smoke showing from the second floor and the roof of the two-story home. Smoke alarms alerted the people inside.
Due to heavy fire conditions to the second floor and attic, the incident commander transitioned to defensive operations at 9:56 p.m., and the fire was declared under control at 10:25 p.m.
Barakey said the home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the second floor and attic, with the fire’s cause determined to be accidental due to the lightning strike.
The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
